Intimate weddings can be just as special as larger celebrations. They’re often chosen by those who want to spend their time with their closest friends and family on their special day or generally looking for something a little more low-key. In the last few years, smaller celebrations are on the rise, and especially due to the pandemic – the desire to have a micro ceremony is more popular than ever. In a recent wedding survey, it was found that ‘second celebrations’ are a growing trend, where couples marry in an intimate ceremony and then have a second, slightly larger gathering with more family and friends. Around 89% of couples said that they would consider this. With this in mind, we wanted to share our ideas for a small wedding in Cheshire.

Why Choose A Small Wedding?

There are many reasons to opt for a small wedding, and we can see why they are becoming more and more popular as time goes on. Restrictions aside, there are a multitude of benefits to enjoying a more intimate celebration. They include…

  • Couples can spend more time with their family and friends
  • Options to have all guests stay overnight
  • Likely to be an easier travel option for your guests
  • Can be planned quickly making them a great option for last-minute celebrations
  • Relaxing atmosphere with less stress
  • Easier planning process
  • There’s always the option for a ‘second celebration’
  • Create a more intimate and personal day

Ideas For A Small Wedding In Cheshire

Our Brereton Suite at The Lion at Malpas is an attractive small wedding venue space in Cheshire, with a team experienced in overseeing and helping to plan small weddings. Here’s what they’d recommend for ideas for a small wedding.

Get creative with transport

Opting for a smaller wedding celebration means there are less people who need to organise transport to and from the venue. With this in mind, why not consider going together. A fun trend amongst smaller celebrations is (bride and groom aside) all wedding guests choosing a fun mode of transport to get to the wedding ceremony – how about a double decker bus, motorbike convoy or horse drawn carriage?

Opt for a unique small wedding venue

One of the beautiful things about a small wedding is that you can choose a quirky and unique venue. For example, our sister pub The Swan at Tarporley has hosted occasions in its decorated and historic Tarporley Room in the past. With less guests, there’s more room to let your creativity flow.

Make use of local suppliers

Considering the current climate, we’d definitely recommend supporting independent businesses. Utilise local suppliers for your special day – fewer guests can mean having more budget to make the elements of your celebration truly memorable. Also, working with local suppliers means it’s easier to tweak your plans as you go.

Keep it intimate

One of the most popular ideas for a small wedding is keeping the whole affair very intimate. Smaller celebrations bring with them the perks of getting to spend more time on your wedding day, to take advantage of this opportunity. You can also keep your wedding very intimate by inviting your guests to stay overnight at your venue too, so you can celebrate into the night without worrying about transport home afterwards.

Use your friends and families’ skills

Do you have a keen photographer in the family? To help keep the numbers down and keep your wedding small, why not get them involved in your wedding photography? If nobody springs to mind, then we’d recommend opting for a wedding photographer who blends into your big day and focuses on natural and candid images that really capture the personal and private atmosphere you’re aiming for.

Make use of the Cheshire countryside

We love the idea of a small wedding in Cheshire as there are so many beautiful green spaces to enjoy. Whether it’s for wedding photos or a stroll with your significant other, the Cheshire countryside is perfect for creating a relaxing atmosphere for your special day. The Lion at Malpas is on the doorstep of local attractions including Bickerton Hills and Beeston Castle which ooze romance. Smaller affairs often mean more time to appreciate the little things.
