Cheshire is renowned for its picturesque countryside, stunning landscapes, and rich equestrian heritage. Find out more…
Equestrian pursuits have deep roots in Cheshire, and the region is home to a host of equestrian centres, riding schools, and competition venues. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or a novice looking to explore the world of horse riding, Cheshire has something to offer for everyone.
One of the standout features of the equestrian scene in Cheshire is the variety of riding opportunities available. From leisurely hacks through the picturesque countryside at Delamere Forest to high-level show jumping and dressage competitions like Bolesworth International, Cheshire caters to a whole range of the equestrian community. Riders can find top-notch facilities like Kelsall Hill Equestrian Centre and expert instruction to further their skills and enjoy their passion for horses with venues often hosting events, clinics, and social gatherings. And there’s also the stunning natural beauty of the county to explore, utilising the bridleways, country lanes, and extensive trail networks that wind through the region’s rolling hills.
For those interested in competitive riding, Cheshire offers an array of prestigious equestrian events and shows, the pinnacle of which is the annual Bolesworth International that will host both CS13* and CSI4* showjumping competitions in 2025 (27 June to 6 July) attracting riders from around the world and offering a truly luxurious backdrop and setting for spectators to soak up the atmosphere.
Cheshire is also home to the thrills and spills of steeplechase. With point to points at Tabley House from November to June. The sport of point-to-point racing, or pointing as it is also known, dates back to 1836 when hunting men used to race their horses from church steeple to church steeple — hence the name “point-to-point”. It is an amateur sport in which many of the leading jump jockeys and national hunt trainers have developed their skills over three miles and a minimum number of 18 fences. It’s a great day out for all the family.
And that’s without mentioning the country’s oldest racecourse in the heart of Chester. Established in 1539 Chester Racecourse on the Roodee is home to the Boodles May Festival and a whole season of flat fixtures and historic races, with a great array of hospitality to indulge in, to suit all budgets.
There’s also the prestigious Cheshire Polo Club, with five playing fields and a packed season of fixtures. It’s a must-visit for passionate enthusiasts and beginners alike, and offers a laid back approach from a picnic in the car boot to full hospitality, not forgetting the spectator involvement at half-time with the stomping of the divots.
With such an equestrian heritage it make sense that some of the most impressive and well-reknowned horse yards in the country reside in the region. From Donald McCain (son of Ginger McCain trainer of the legendary Red Rum) to Michael Owen’s Manor House Stables and from Greenall Guerriero at Stockton Hall to Peel Bloodstock & Stud the list is impressive.
