The late British wine critic Michael Broadbent believed that: “Drinking good wine with good food in good company is one of life’s most civilised pleasures.”
At The Lion, this is a doctrine that we certainly subscribe to, and we aim to provide our customers with the perfect setting to enjoy our delicious wines, as well as great food in the company of friends and family.
We take our wines seriously here at The Lion and we’re constantly on the lookout for the best and most brilliant bottles to serve at the bar. We even partner with our very own wine expert to bring you the very best options for every season.
From crisp Sauvignon Blancs to fruity Verdejos, in our latest blog, we’ll be taking a look at our extensive wine menu and exploring our team’s favourite whites and rosés from across the world.
How we choose our wines at The Lion
At The Lion, we do our utmost to make sure that our customers are able to choose from a wide selection of the very best wines, either for an evening drink or to complement the array of dishes available in the restaurant.
The wine menu changes regularly in order to give customers a broader range of choice and is tailored to align with seasonal changes, which allows certain wines to be brought to the fore.
This menu is curated in collaboration with a leading Cheshire-based wine expert, John from DeFINE Wine who advises us on any bottles that may be trending or seasonal favourites, which helps us to bring the most up to date options to customers.
Our wine menu includes a variety of wonderful whites and resplendent rosés which means we can cater to all preferences and accommodate different tastes to ensure that there is something for everyone.
White wine favourites
Bella Modella Pinot Grigio, Italy
This light and crisp Italian pinot grigio is the perfect wine to enjoy in our outdoor patio area on a beautiful summer’s evening as you watch the sun slowly set.
A zesty white with notes of green apple, the Bella Modella’s moderate level of acidity makes it cool and refreshing and perfect for any palate, which is why our team love it. This particular pinot pairs superbly with light chicken and our pasta dishes.
Vidal Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand
This kiwi wine enjoys legendary status here at The Lion and was sorely missed on our menu in late 2021 and 2022 following a frost-ravaged harvest in the autumn of 2021.
Fortunately, it’s made a welcome return to our wine menu, with customers once again able to enjoy this classic Marlborough-style Sauvignon Blanc. The Vidal possesses a rich flavour with aromas of passionfruit, citrus and fresh herbs.
This best-selling wine pairs perfectly with our seafood dishes and can be enjoyed all year round.
Clea Verdejo, Spain
It may be new to our wine menu, but this Spanish wine is quickly becoming a firm favourite among our customers who are loving its full-bodied and aromatic flavour.
Native to the village of Rueda in rural northern Spain, the Clea Verdejo is best enjoyed while its young and no longer than 3-4 years after it’s been bottled. The Spanish white has a bright and fresh acidity with cut grass, citrus and balsamic notes, which is followed by an aniseed aftertaste.
Interestingly, the Verdejo grapes are harvested at night to control the temperature and ensure optimal taste.
Rosé wine
Burlesque White Zinfandel, California
We love the fact that so many of our customers have a real sweet tooth and those in possession of one certainly love to indulge in our gorgeous California White Zinfandel.
Selected from the vineyards of the Lodi region of California, this rosé is essentially a luscious, melted strawberry ice cream in a glass, complemented by bright, berry fruited aromas and a slightly off-dry finish.
This lovely wine pairs particularly well with our cheese and biscuits, which includes local cheddar and brie.
Chateau Saint Pierre Rosé, Provence
A light and fragrant rosé originating from the beautiful southern French region of Provence, close to the Italian border and the stunning Cote d’Azur.
A typical Provence rosé, this wine offers gorgeous aromas of white peach and spice, with hints of tropical fruits and a fullness that’s both elegant and refreshing in equal measure.
Its Mediterranean roots makes it the perfect accompaniment to seafood-based dishes such as our magnificent Seabass with spring vegetable and Josper roasted potatoes.
